Erik Burmeister began as Superintendent of Menlo Park City School District on July 1, 2017 after serving for three years as Hillview Middle School’s Principal and two years as the Assistant Superintendent. Prior to joining MPCSD, Erik was the principal at Union Middle School in San Jose and Vice Principal at Westmont High School in Campbell. Before moving into administration, Erik taught high school English and Speech/Debate as well as serving as a coach, Activities Director, Dean of Students and youth leader.
It was Stanford University, where Erik graduated in 1997 with a Master’s degree in Educational Policy Analysis, that brought the young, idealistic teacher from the Midwest to Northern California. Prior to moving to California, Erik graduated with a BS in Secondary Education-English and a BS in Communications from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio near where he began his teaching career. Erik also holds a Master’s degree from San Jose State University where he received his administrative credential.
In partnership with the Stanford Design School, Erik has become a leader in applying design and innovation strategies to solve a variety of education challenges including closing the achievement gap, school redesign, technology implementation, and Asset Development. It is MPCSD that has fostered this love of creative problem solving and has provided the “Yes, and” culture that encourages and attracts educators like Erik.
Erik was named Middle Grades Principal of the Year for the Association of California School Administrators and one of the three finalists for the 2014 NASSP National Principal of the Year. In 2012, the Wiseman Group named Erik Multiplier of the Year in Education. As a thought leader in the field of design and education, Erik has co-founded The SchoolFWD Foundation with a mission to bring design solutions to leaders ready to make lasting change in their schools and districts.
